Walter Albert Thuer, 101, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at his home. He was born in Indianapolis on March 18, 1916 to the late William and Elizabeth (Stiwe) Thuer. After graduating from Southport High School, Walter enlisted in the Navy and was stationed on the U.S.S. Santa Fe during WWII. He grew cut flowers for several wholesale distributors and owned his own greenhouses. Walter was a lifelong member of St. Roch Catholic Church and a member of Moose Lodge #17. Survivors include his daughters, Mary Jo Benson and Theresa Johnson; daughter-in-law, Joan Thuer; grandchildren, Walter C. Thuer Jr., Alison Bryant, Elizabeth Thuer-Harper (Ryan) and Shelly Rena Patton-Poleski; and five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Walter is also survived by numerous extended family and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred; and sons, Walter C. and William Thuer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 10 a.m. in St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania St., with prayers being said at the funeral home prior to Mass at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends will gather on Thursday, April 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Burial: Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions have been suggested to St. Roch Church.
