Armand Smith, Jr. Obituary

   Armand V. Smith, Jr., 88, a distinguished scholar and beloved member of the community, passed away on Thursday at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, NY. Born in Chicago, Armand's journey through life took him from the heart of the Midwest to various corners of the country, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

   Salutatorian at Carmel High School, Armand's academic pursuits led him to Purdue University, where he earned both his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, and M.S Degree in Statistics. Armand later went to Virginia Tech University, where he achieved his Ph.D in Statistics.

   After graduation, amongst other academic positions, Armand became a Professor of Mathematics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology located in Terra Haute, Indiana. His commitment to education and knowledge culminated in a fulfilling 20-year career as an Associate Professor Emeritus at SUNY Geneseo, where he inspired countless students with his passion for learning.

   Armand's devotion extended beyond the classroom to his family.

   He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude “Jean”, in 2021, and his parents.

   Surviving are his sons, Eric (Jill) Smith of Baldwinsville, NY and Douglas (Renee) Smith of Chicago, IL. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Eric Alex, Eva, Nathan, Evan, Liam, and Brendan Smith; sisters, Annette Clark and Patricia Galt, both of Indianapolis, IN; and many nieces and nephews.

An avid traveler, Armand lived in Australia, with his family, for about one year. He took numerous trips to Europe, and visited most, if not all, of the 50 states within the U.S.

   To honor Armand's life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 126 W. Georgia St., Indianapolis, IN 46225. On the above date, 55 years earlier, Armand married Gertrude “Jean”, his beloved wife at the same church.

   A funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in the church.

   Armand will be laid to rest in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis, IN.
