Arthur Timpe Obituary

Arthur Joseph Timpe, Jr., 78, died on November 8, 2022, surrounded by his loved ones. A truly gentle man, his was a life well spent, focused on family.

He was born in Indianapolis on April 8, 1944, to Arthur J. and Loretta M. (Schott) Timpe. An only child, he was one of many cousins growing up in their tight-knit south side Catholic community. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School, graduating in 1962. He attended Xavier University for one semester until his father’s death led him down a different path. Returning home, he enrolled at Marian College to finish his degree in accounting. It was there, at the Marian College outdoor pool, that he met the love of his life, Nancy Schwab, a lifeguard. Art graduated from Marian in 1968. He and Nancy were married on April 25, 1970.

The next 52 years were full of fun, family, and fellowship. Art earned his CPA certificate and after several jobs in the corporate world, set out on his own as Arthur J. Timpe, Jr. CPA. His small office on 16th Street sat in the shadow of the IMS. He loved auto racing and had many friends and clients associated with the track throughout the years. At home, he and Nancy raised five children mostly on the south side, attending St. Roch Church and School, Roncalli High School, and Cathedral High School. Art was an active member of the St. Roch community, participating in the Parish Council, the Youth Athletic Board, and the Friday Night Volleyball group among others.

Art never knew a stranger and enjoyed meeting new people on every occasion. His favorite activity was anything that included spending time with his family. Favorite places to do this were his beloved Lake Tippecanoe and Walt Disney World, with Las Vegas coming in a close 3rd. He loved sunsets and never missed a chance to catch his favorites from the Huntington Beach pier. Cards, golf, movies, dinners, Indians, Colts and Pacers games—they were all great and even better with family involved. Pontoon cruises on the lake will be treasured, as will many family trips to Disney through the years. No souvenir or sweet treat was ever declined when Dad/Poppa was around, including for himself, as he always “needed a new hat” everywhere he went!

He was thrilled to pass on his CPA practice to his two oldest sons in retirement. He and Nancy then split their time between Indianapolis, Florida, and California.

Art is survived by his loving wife, Nancy J. (Schwab) Timpe, and children Arthur J. Timpe III (Jennifer) and Lori Herrera of Indianapolis, IN; Gary M. Timpe (Wendy Esterline) of Carmel, IN; Sharon A. Tebbe (Matt) of Fishers, IN; and Edward J. Timpe (Prarthana Mohan) of Santa Clarita, CA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Grace, Maggie and Sally Timpe; Jackson and Nick Herrera; Elyse and Ethan Timpe; Tobey and Lucy Esterline;  Deacon and Celeste Tebbe; and Cyrus Timpe.

A memorial celebration of Art’s life will be held Wednesday, November 23, at the Northside Events & Social Club (formerly the Northside K of C), 2100 E. 71st St., Indianapolis, IN 46220, with a calling from 11:00am-1:00pm and a prayer service at 1:00pm, followed by appetizers and drinks.  Memorial contributions can be made to A Miracle Place or the Boulevard Place Food Pantry.

As you recall Art’s life, smile and be inspired by the daily words of encouragement he told his children as they parted each day, “Have fun, work hard, and learn lots of things.”
