Brother Howard P. Studivant, OSB, age 87, of Indianapolis, passed February 19, 2023. Born on September 16, 1935 in Faunsdale, Alabama, he was the son of the late John and Bessie Studivant Dozier.
Brother Howard entered the religious life and was the last surviving Brother of the former Benedictine Monastery of St. Maur in Indianapolis. He served as Sacristan at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral and at St. Rita Catholic Church. He also drove school bus for St. Rita and Holy Angels Schools. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral, Knights of St. Peter Claver and the Knights of Columbus.
Bro. Howard enjoyed traveling, especially the trips to Kings Island with the students from St. Rita’s. He like to play Bingo in his spare time and once had a cat that lived to be 28 years old. Pets to him were an important part of his life.
Bro. Howard is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline and Milton Washington of Birmingham, Alabama and Rhondria and James Young of Montgomery, Alabama; several nieces and nephews; three young men whom he mentored over the years, Jason Perkins, Kenneth Cole and Mark Cole and a special friend, Juanita Cantrell. In addition to his parents, Bro. Howard was preceded in death by his brothers, William Studivant, John Studivant, James Dozier and Otis Dozier.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Rev. Richard M. Ginther at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2023 in SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral, 1347 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, where visitation will be held starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis.
