Caroline "Carrie" Ann (Brunson) Curry

Caroline Ann "Carrie" Curry, 79, of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, surrounded by the love and care of her family.

Carrie was born on June 11, 1947, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to the late Vernis H. and Mildred C. (Foltz) Brunson. On June 7, 1969, she married C. Joseph (Joe) Curry, and together they shared 50 years of marriage, until his death in 2019.

Carrie was a proud graduate of Our Lady of Grace High School, Class of 1965. She earned her nursing degree from Marion County General Hospital School of Nursing, attended Indiana University, and dedicated 43 years to the nursing profession. Carrie worked as a registered nurse in many capacities, including staff, charge, private-duty and volunteer nursing roles. The majority of her career was spent caring for Labor and Delivery patients, as well as for babies in the Special Care Nursery, at St Francis Hospital and later, with Franciscan Hospice.  Her faith, compassion, skill, and commitment to caring for others touched countless lives, throughout her career, before she retired in 2013.

Carrie always had an outgoing, creative and adventurous spirit. In her younger and middle years, she particularly loved boating and water skiing. She spent many happy times and much energy on the waters of Lake Lemon and Brookville Reservoir – and in friendly competition with one of her sisters, to see who could ski the longest.  She loved all sorts of crafts and artistic projects with her sisters, her friends, her children and later, grandchildren.  And as for adventure, she and a good friend even jumped out of an airplane, to celebrate her 50th birthday. 

Carrie gave generously, of her time over the years, often inspiring others to do the same.  She volunteered as a nurse, for many years, with Camp Healing Tree, in Indianapolis. She went on medical missions in the aftermath of several natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina - and later with an organization founded by her sister-in-law, in Haiti.  In addition to doing medical mission work, Carrie volunteered with a literacy program, in Belle Glade, FL and served her church parishes, teaching Sunday School classes for kids, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, taking part in Eucharistic Adoration, helping with various fundraising initiatives and many other programs and events, over the years.  She also found great joy and fulfillment in her work with St Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, where she served for many years.  In so many situations, if you looked for the Helpers, you’d surely spot Carrie, among them.

Especially in her later years, Carrie found much joy in sewing, quilting, reading, playing games with her friends and family and traveling.  When she got her first iPhone, she quickly developed teenager-level love of the thing, particularly for its usefulness in playing word games with many of her friends and family.  Carrie did love words, even if there were a couple she always claimed NEVER to say.  This was a long-running joke with her kids, who have all heard her say one of them, at least once or twice.  Never one for idle hands, she loved making things to give to other people and she worked, diligently, on her embroidery projects, even in her final few days. In fact, at any point during her last weeks, if you looked at her hands, you would see them holding and doing one of two things: working with her embroidery needle or praying her rosary.

Throughout her life – and above all else - Carrie cherished time spent with her family and friends. Her greatest happiness came from being a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she treasured the countless moments shared with all those she loved, so very much.

Carrie is lovingly remembered by her children, Christina Mathis, Anne Coleman, and Donald (Michelle) Curry; her siblings, Jani (Bill) Griffin, Bud Brunson, Cathy (Lonnie Hazel) Tupper, Tom (Betty) Brunson, Don (Kathy) Brunson, and Millie (Don) Livingston; her grandchildren, Marlie (Joel) Washer, Aden Coleman, and Louise, Heidi, and Damien Curry; and her great-grandchildren, Natalie, Calvin, and Benjamin Washer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C. Joseph (Joe) Curry; her sister, Connie Lane; brother, John Brunson; her son-in-law, Ronald Coleman and her granddaughter, Aurora Coleman.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of her life, on Thursday, July 16, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis, with a Nurses Honor Guard and Holy Rosary service to begin at 7:30 p.m. A eulogy and special musical tribute by her grandson, Aden, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 17, in St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania St. - followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Douglas Hunter presiding. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, in Indianapolis. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the church.
