Catherine Matarazzo Obituary

Catherine Miller Matarazzo, 88, a longtime resident of Pequannock, NJ passed away on January 4, 2024, in Indianapolis, IN.

Catherine was born in Blantyre, Scotland in 1935, the daughter of the late George and Jeanie Miller. Catherine was raised in a loving family with two brothers and four sisters. In 1955, Catherine left Scotland to become a nanny in New York. Not long after arriving in the States, she would interview for a job in the garment district where she met her future husband, Aniello. Catherine and Aniello built their dream home in Pequannock in 1964 and raised four children. Between raising a family, serving her community, and running a clothing store (Down by the Station), she still had time to stop, have a cup of tea and chat with a multitude of friends.

In 1984, she would lose the love of her life to cancer, and for a very short time she was lost. However, in true Catherine fashion, she returned to her passion of caring for children and successfully ran a daycare from her home. When her own grandchildren started to arrive in 1990, she closed up shop and traveled across the country multiple times a year to visit and attend to her grandchildren’s needs. Finally, in later years she became a private nanny to a few families who loved her as their own.

In 2021, Catherine moved to Indianapolis, IN and lived at the St. Augustine Home for the Aged, which is run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. Once again making friends and bringing joy to those around her, she thrived. We thank the Sisters for providing our mother with a beautiful experience during her last two years.

In addition to her parents, Catherine was preceded in death by her husband Aniello, her siblings Thomas Miller, Agnes Miller, Norma Spinosa, Barbara Caviolo and Robert Miller.

She is survived by her children, George (Anika) Matarazzo of Dusseldorf, Germany; Aniello “Neal” (Pam) Matarazzo of Pequannock, Giovanna “Joanne” (Derek) Mandel of Zionsville, IN and Robert Matarazzo of Garwood. She doted on eight grandchildren: Jeffrey (Marissa) Mandel, Adam (Kirsten) Mandel, Coda Matarazzo, Nicholas Matarazzo, Noah Matarazzo, Isabella Matarazzo, Charlotte Matarazzo, Jack Matarazzo and three great grandchildren, Carter, Islay and Riley. Her loving and devoted sister, Ann Scoular, remains to keep the family stories alive.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 4-8 p.m. at the M. John Scanlan Funeral home. A funeral Mass to celebrate Catherine’s life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 10:00 am, at St. Mary’s Church in Pompton Lakes.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Catherine’s memory can be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor in Indianapolis.
