Charles Aaron Hummel, 88, of Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022. He was born on July 3, 1933 in Celina, Tennessee to the late Charles Halton and Autie E. (Thompson) Hummel. Charlie graduated from Emmerich Manual High School, class of 1952.
Charlie served in the United States Army and was a Korean War veteran. He was a member of the Teamsters Union for 42 years, working for Consolidated Freightways the last 27 of those years as a truck driver. Charlie loved to race stock cars and Jeff Gordan was his favorite NASCAR driver. He was a long-time member of the Capitol City Conservation Club where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved his Big Duke chewing tobacco and Diet Coke.
Charlie was a firm believer in Jesus Christ to the very end and was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife Eva (Pringle) Hummel; children, Gary P. Hummel Jr., Terri Lambert, Brad Hummel and Alisha Renfro; honorary son and nephew, Joshua (Ramona) Sauers and Serious Daniel Sauers; step-son, George (Melissa) Gates, Jr.; 18 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Patricia (Rist) Hummel; sons, Gary Lea Hummel and Charles “Buddy” Hummel; and step-son, Robert Gates.
Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, June 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., with eulogies and stories at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1530 Union St., with prayers being said at the funeral home prior to Mass at 10:30 a.m. Charlie will be buried next to his first wife, Patricia, in St. Joseph Cemetery.
