Charles Edward Neher, 87, of Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, April 10. He was born November 29, 1937 in Indianapolis, to the late Charles and Iva Neher (Brock). Charles filled his life with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments that touched everyone around him. After graduating from Decatur Central High School, he dedicated himself to his community—serving as a volunteer with the Decatur Township Fire Department and spending 40 years working for a public works company. Following his retirement, Charles found fulfillment working alongside Andy, Susan, Gina and Emily at Lawn Pride.
In 1996, Charles married his beloved wife, Alice. Together, they created many cherished memories, dividing their time between the sunny winters of Florida and the warm summers of Indianapolis. A man of adventure and generosity, Charles was always ready to lend a hand—whether rescuing a turtle or enjoying a fun pizza lunch with friends. But perhaps his happiest moments came from late-night Whoppers and pizza with his grandkids after long ballgames, creating traditions that will live on in their hearts.
Charles had a lifelong passion for fishing, spending countless hours with his trusty boat, 'Ol Blue,' and passing on his love for the water to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A true nature enthusiast, he also nurtured a beautiful apple orchard and cultivated a thriving garden, where his tomatoes were always the highlight of his harvest. His appreciation for the outdoors extended to his involvement as a lifelong member of the Conservation Bird Dog Club, where he enjoyed time spent with fellow hunters and nature lovers.
Music played a big role in Charles' life, and he braved the summer heat to attend the Beanblossom Bluegrass Festival with his grandson, Chad. He was known for hosting private concerts and fish fries in his Florida driveway, bringing together the best players in the park—including Chad—to create an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie.
An ardent fan of the Indy 500, Charles’ connection to the race began in his youth when he sold newspapers at the track. Over the years, he continued the tradition, attending the race with his son, Tim, and grandson, Tyler. Charles’ love for sports extended beyond racing to supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their athletic events, where he cheered from the sidelines with unmatched pride.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Iva Neher; his brothers, Terry and Kenny Neher; and his son, Tim Neher, who tragically passed away in August 2024.
He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Alice; his children, Shelley (Rick) Lambert, Andrew (Gina) Neher, and daughter-in-law Theresa Neher; his grandchildren, Sarah (Justin) Foster, Chad (Tasha) Lambert, Emily Neher, Evan Neher, Erin Neher, Tyler Neher, and Tally Neher; and his great-grandchildren, Ethan Foster, Brayden Foster, TJ Foster, and Olive Lambert. Charles is also survived by his stepchildren, Brian (Katie) Anderson, Susan (Bryan) McIntosh, and Tracie Barthel; his step-grandchildren, Jacob McIntosh, Katie (Teresa) McIntosh, Justin (Katie) McIntosh, Lexi McIntosh, Miles Anderson, Apostolea Kyraicou, Elias Kyraicou, and Marianna Kyraicou; and step-great-grandchildren, Luke McIntosh, Malakai McIntosh, Blakelee McIntosh, and Kolbi McIntosh. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Joe (Dana) Neher and brother-in-law David Barker.
Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home.
