Daniel "Danny" Earl Johnston

Daniel “Danny” Earl Johnston, 75, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 13, 1950, in Beech Grove to the late Charles Paul and Marjorie Sue (Tumey) Johnston. On August 27, 1971, Danny married the love of his life, Mary Margaret (Piazza) Johnston, and together they built a beautiful life over 54 years of marriage.

A proud graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Class of 1968, Danny went on to become a skilled jeweler, retiring from Hofmeister Personal Jewelers in 2015. He approached his work with the same quiet dedication he brought to every part of his life.

Danny had an adventurous spirit and a deep love for the water. His dream was to sell everything and live aboard a sailboat, embracing the freedom of open horizons. He took numerous sailing courses and even sailed from Florida to the Bahamas, an experience he cherished. He also enjoyed traveling, golf, and motorcycles, and he was known to be a bit of a daredevil when the moment called for it.

Despite a lifetime of heart challenges, Danny never complained. He faced every setback with strength, calm, and humility, refusing to let his health define him or slow him down. He was the strong, quiet, laid‑back presence everyone could rely on, always willing to help, always steady, always kind. Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted, loving, and generous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Danny is survived by his loving wife, Mary Johnston; daughters, Angel (Steve) Hall and Andrea (Jeff) Rustman; siblings, Sharon (Cosmo) Piazza, Maureen (Jim) Green, and Kathleen Cecil; grandchildren, Jake (Lyndsey Swan) Hall, Alex (Jessica) Hall, Riley Rustman, and Casey Rustman; great‑granddaughters, Madison and Ellie Hall; and his beloved dog, Bitzi. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Mike, Terry, and Patricia Johnston; and brother‑in‑law Mark Cecil.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, June 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lauck & Veldhof Funeral Home, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis, for a celebration of Danny’s life.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, in Danny’s memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
