Dean Curry

Harold Dean Curry, 79, passed away in Greensburg, Indiana, on August 29, 2024.

He was born on August 11, 1945, to Harold and Thelma Curry.

Dean went to Columbia City High School and loved to speak of his former classmates, playing football, being Vice President of his Class and earning a college scholarship for his time delivering papers. He married Jo Ann Neal and had their only child, James Dean Curry. Dean was drafted November 1969 and served in Vietnam until being injured by a booby trap and receiving The Purple Heart in June 1970.  Dean went on to work as an accountant for the Indianapolis Parks Department until retiring. He loved going to family dinners for platefuls of home cooked meals and visiting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dean was a football fan and a Colt’s football fanatic. He would follow NFL teams and diligently keep track of injuries and other intricacies that might give him an edge betting on weekend and Monday Night Football games. While most times he would confess as “Not doing very good for the week,” he loved the chase as much as the win and, like the accountant he was, kept detailed records of the various teams. Dean took pride in his lawn and weed eating, and he managed it himself until suffering an anoxic brain injury in January 2023.  His one wish was to live in his home as long as possible, and with the help of his son Jim and Jim’s wife, Stephanie, he was able to do so until August 13, 2024 when he was diagnosed with a rapid growing small cell lung cancer that kept him in the hospital for thirteen days and at an extended care facility for three days before passing.

He is survived by his sister Sandra Searfoss, son Jim Owen, grandchildren Joe, Ryan, and James Owen, and great grandchildren, Ryley and Liz Owen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dick Curry.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2024, from 2pm to 4pm at Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services 1458 South Meridian Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46225, with full military honors to follow.
