Donald Amt Obituary

Donald Fred Amt

August 9, 1947 – December 7, 2025

Donald Fred Amt, 78, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Community South Hospital.

Born on August 9, 1947, in Indianapolis to the late John Amt and Pauline Amt Geer, Don lived a life defined by faith, family, and service. A proud graduate of Southport High School, class of 1965, he continued his education at the University of Illinois, Champaign, where he pursued his passion for architecture. His professional life reflected his dedication to excellence, as he became an active member of the Construction Specifications Institute (C.S.I.) and served on the Architectural Advisory Board for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

Don’s faith was central to his life. As a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, he served faithfully on many boards and committees, was a past Elder and church treasurer, and joyfully sang tenor and later bass in the church choir. Along with his brother, he also sang in a quartet, Credo.  His commitment to his congregation and his community was a testament to his deep love for the Lord.

Beyond his professional and church service, Don found joy in collecting Heisey Glass, building model trains, cooking for family and friends, and spending time on the golf course. Golf was one of his favorite pastimes, and he cherished the camaraderie and relaxation it brought. He also loved to write poetry and especially blessed his friends and family with a Christmas poem each year.  He found peace and strength attending Camp Arcadia on Lake Michigan each August.  He was a devoted father and grandfather, always present for his children and grandchildren, and his love and guidance will be deeply missed.

Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda J. (Taylor) Amt, with whom he shared two daughters, Lisa and Rebecca. He later found love again and remarried Rebecca Sue (Rump) Amt on November 12, 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Amt; daughters, Lisa Cummins and Rebecca (Matt) Messina-Graham; brother, Robert (Alice) Amt; grandchildren, Brianna, Kaitlyn (Devon), Malia, and Maya; and five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John Amt and Pauline Amt-Geer; his adoptive father, Robert Geer; and his brother, Kenneth Amt.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, December 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 3932 Mi Casa Ave., Indianapolis. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., officiated by Pastor David Shadday. Burial will take place at Concordia Cemetery, Indianapolis.
