James McCoy Obituary

James David (JD) McCoy, 62, of Avon, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Roudebush VA Hospital. He was born on January 28, 1964, in Bessemer, Alabama, to William A. and Peggy J. (Wilson) McCoy.

JD lived a life rich with creativity, curiosity, and heart. A proud graduate of Indiana University, he earned his bachelor’s degree in fine art and carried his artistic talent into every corner of his life. Whether he was painting, sketching, or building intricate model cars and airplanes, JD approached each project with the same passion and attention to detail that defined him.

Before pursuing his artistic path, JD honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1987 through 1995, including during Operation Desert Storm. His service was a source of deep pride, shaping his strength, resilience, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved.

JD had a big personality and an even bigger heart. He loved to laugh, to talk, and to joke around with anyone who crossed his path. His friendliness was effortless, he could make a stranger feel like an old friend within minutes. He loved riding his Buell motorcycle, working on classic cars with his father, watching Alabama football with his mom, going to concerts with his kids, and blasting his favorite rock bands, like Metallica, KISS, and Flogging Molly. Proud of his Scottish heritage, he embraced opportunities to travel and explore the world.

He will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends, and all who were lucky enough to share in his humor, his stories, and his generous spirit.

James is survived by his mother, Peggy McCoy; his children, Erin (Britt) Liles, Amanda (Ross) Schafstall, Alicia (Josh) Maves, Jonathon (Sara) Wilson, Andrew (Rachael) McCoy, and Liam McCoy; his grandchildren, Gracie Liles, Christian Schafstall, Emerson Brayden Liles, Mason Maves, Colt Branson Liles, Jasper McCoy, and Onyx McCoy; his Sister Rebecca (Kenny) Hutson, Brother- in- Law David Spear, “brother,” Adam (Amber) Murtadha, and his nieces and nephew.
