James Edward Shepardson, 45, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly from a cardiac event on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. He was born on July 25, 1980, in Indianapolis, to William Paul and Patricia Marie (Mader) Shepardson.
A graduate of Roncalli High School, class of 1998, James went on to become a licensed pharmacy technician and was employed with Guardian Pharmacy. He approached his work with the same care and thoughtfulness he brought to every part of his life.
James had a deep love for music, lowriders and had a passion for Transformers. He enjoyed playing guitar and for a time was the lead singer of the band Call Me Ishmael, a creative outlet that reflected his artistic spirit. He was imaginative, expressive and endlessly creative. His sense of humor was unmatched.
Those who knew James will remember his gentle heart and generous nature. His handmade and personalized creations became treasured by those who were lucky enough to receive one. He was thoughtful, kind and always ready to help. He had a strong sense of fairness and was quick to stand up for what was right. He adored animals and was known to take in many species — turtles, fish, crawdads, hamsters, his dog/best friend Jango and favorite neighborhood cat he lovingly named “Sammy Davis Jr.” And although allergic to cats, James always made sure its needs were met.
His family meant everything to him and he treasured any quality time — weekly Sunday breakfasts, evenings around a bonfire, porch parties, and all of the lively birthday and holiday celebrations. He loved good food — especially leftovers — and had a particular fondness for dips, sauces and unbearably hot wings.
He is survived by his parents, Bill and Patricia Shepardson; his siblings, Tom Shepardson, Sarah (Chad) Daniels and Will (Katie) Shepardson; and his beloved nieces and nephews, Cash, Coral and Cecilia Daniels, and Layla and Isaiah Shepardson. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
Family and friends will gather on Sunday, January 18, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Lauck & Veldhof Funeral Home, 1458 S. Meridian St., with a rosary service at 5:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 19, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1530 Union St., with Fr. Bob Robeson presiding. Additional visitation will take place at the funeral home beginning at 10 a.m., with prayers at 10:30 a.m. prior to Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
James grew up across the street from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as an altar server for many years. The church played a meaningful role in his life. Contributions in James’ memory to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund can be made online at www.sacredheartindy.com.
