In Loving Memory of Jay Gilliam Lawrie
October 16, 1944 – October 28, 2025
Jay Gilliam Lawrie, 81, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Born in Beech Grove to Joseph Blakestone and Louise (Gilliam) Lawrie, Jay lived a life filled with grace, laughter, and unwavering love for her family and community.
A proud graduate of Sacred Heart High School (Class of 1962) and 4 Star Beauty College, Jay pursued her passion for beauty and style as a cosmetologist, model for Block’s Department Store, and entrepreneur. She co-owned The Hair Depot with her lifelong best friend, Josephine Bova, creating not just hairstyles but lasting friendships.
Jay’s zest for life was evident in her love of poker nights, trips to Las Vegas, and sun-soaked days on Florida beaches. A devoted fan of the Pacers, Colts, and Fever, she was a true Southsider at heart. Her greatest joy, however, came from her role as a mother and grandmother—affectionately known as Grandma J, whose warmth and wisdom shaped generations.
Jay will be remembered for her kindness, her radiant smile, and her ability to make everyone feel like family. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her children, Amy (Bill) Davis and Brian A. (Tracey) Turk; grandchildren, Jordan (Harrison) Smith, Cassey (Alex) Krupa, Megan Turk (Corbin Fath), Daniel (Olivia) Davis and Jack Davis; great-grandchildren, Melanie, Tristan, Amelia, and David; and her treasured friend, Josephine Bova. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Ann James and Sue Burkert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 4 at 12 noon at St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania St., preceded by a gathering from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements and care are provided by Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services.
In honor of Jay’s generous spirit, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Roncalli High School. Envelopes will be available at the church.
