Larry D. Hungate
June 2, 1946 – November 4, 2025
Indianapolis, Indiana
Larry D. Hungate, 79, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly on November 4, 2025, at Community North Heart and Vascular Hospital.
Born to Halden and Marjorie (Lugger) Hungate on June 2, 1946, Larry was a proud 1964 graduate of Cathedral High School. He married his best friend, Thankful Ann Hungate, on August 26, 1977, and together they shared a lifetime of laughter, love, and adventure.
Larry dedicated 36 years of service as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. Outside of work, he was known for his many passions — from umpiring softball and kickball games, to singing in the St. Peter and Paul and Eli Lilly choirs, to strumming his guitar and bowling with friends.
A true character and storyteller, Larry’s humor and warmth lit up every room he entered. He loved animals deeply, took joy in playing Santa for various organizations, and could always be counted on for a good laugh or a great tale.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife Thankful Ann Hungate; grandchildren, Kelsi Bricker (Jeremy) and Kyle Westfall; and great-grandson, Kane Westfall. He is also survived by family members Step-Son Bill Westfall (Janell), Jo Nell and Donald Polston, Sister-in-law Roberta and Eric Allen, brother-in-law Charles and Debby Arnold, and several cousins. He also leaves behind his cherished pets and great-grand dog. All of whom brought him great joy!
He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant brother, Robert Hungate.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m. A private graveside burial will take place immediately afterward at Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Larry’s name to Sleepy Hollow Pet Ranch, 147 Tri Sab Ln, Indianapolis, IN 46217 — a fitting tribute to his love of animals.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Lauck & Veldhof Funeral and Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46225
