Leo Thomas Evans, 79, of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital. He was born on July 3, 1944, in Indianapolis to the late Lee S. and Rosemary (Hulsman) Evans.
Leo grew up in a family of 7 Children living on the East Side of Indianapolis near Little Flower Catholic Church and graduated from Cathedral High School where he excelled in sports.
Leo was appointed to the Indianapolis Fire Department on 12/18/1968 and served for 19 years until retiring on August 22, 1987, due to a back injury. Leo drove a school bus for a number of years after retirement with the Catholic Church and truly enjoyed being a part of so many children’s lives and watching them grow up.
Leo could be found volunteering at the Hermitage in Beach Grove where he would minister to those that were residents there. He found great joy in being able to share his faith with others and encourage them when they were not feeling their best.
His greatest joy was his three children, his six grandchildren and his great grandson as well as his many nieces and nephews that all called him Papa Leo. Although his pain kept him sidelined in his later years, he was always the life of the party and truly enjoyed time spent with his family.
Survivors include his children Mark (Celina) Evans, Patty Jo Evans and Michael (Michelle) Evans; siblings, James (Jan) Evans and John (Mary) Evans; grandchildren, Nicole (Kyle) Evans Steinacker, Kayla Evans, Rachel Evans, Catrina Evans, Diana Evans and Julianna Evans; and great-grandson, Connor Steinacker.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Patti Evans, Roseann Hamel, Michael (Mikey) Evans and Frank Evans.
Family and friends will gather on Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in Little Flower Catholic Church, 4720 E. 13th St., Indianapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation in the church at 12 noon with Fr. James Ferrell presiding. Inurnment: Calvary Cemetery.
