Mary Lee (Lauck) Battles, 81, of New Palestine, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, June 3, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 29, 1941 in Indianapolis to the late Leo W. and Anna Marie (Ohleyer) Lauck. Mary Lee wed her loving husband, Richard Battles, on April 4, 1964 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mary Lee was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, class of 1959 and Marian College where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in 1963. She retired from Indianapolis Public Schools as a budget analyst for the Instructional Media & IT departments after 26 years.
Mary Lee was an active member of St. Simon the Apostle parish & school for many years. She was instrumental in helping St. Simon with the organization of their parish festival, fundraising activities, coach, track meet timer, and above all, and maybe most remembered as the ‘Playground Mom’. Mary Lee loved reading mystery novels and watching mystery shows like Murder She Wrote & NCIS. Mary Lee thoroughly enjoyed her family & friends.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Richard Battles; children, John, Mike (Maureen), Beau (Kimberly), Debra Cunningham and Tina (Rob) Montgomery; siblings, Jo Ann Lichtenberg, Barbara J. (Anders) Flodin, Leo B. (Bernadette) Lauck, Rosemary Beckham, Anthony W. (Jenny) Lauck and Elizabeth (Michael) Stahl; and grandchildren, Conor Cunningham, Regan Montgomery, Anthony Battles, Joe Battles, Mason Montgomery, Aidan Battles, Monica Cunningham, Morgan Montgomery, Wil Battles and TJ Montgomery. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother, Robert Joseph Lauck.
Family and friends will gather on Monday, June 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral Home, 1458 S. Meridian St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. John McCaslin presiding. Prayers will be said in the funeral home prior to Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery.
