Matthew "Matt" Prewitt Obituary

Matthew Shay Prewitt, 51, of Indianapolis and Madison, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly from complications from Type-1 diabetes. He was born on November 19, 1972, in Greenfield, at Hancock Regional Hospital, to Tanya Sue (Thompson) Prewitt and Charles David Prewitt.

Matt was a proud graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, class of 1991 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Italian Literature in 1999.  He worked as the administrative assisted to the president of Collegiate Housing Services for over twenty years. Four of Matt’s greatest joys were his beloved Boston Terriers, Tipton, Tigger and Pim, and his Cockapoo, Oreo.

Matt loved life, was very loyal, loved to teach and share new things with his nieces and nephews and enjoyed traveling with his spouse; their most recent trip was to the Holy Land just prior to covid.  Matt had a contagious laugh (giggle) and loved to make people laugh.  He was “quirky,” “witty,” and a very gracious and kind host.  Matt was enthusiastic about being a “Swifty” and was proud to have taken his niece, Riley, to her first Taylor Swift concert.

Matt loved music, knitting, and Elizabethan Literature.  He loved anything Judy Garland and always asked that “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody” by Judy Garland be played at his funeral.  He was not afraid to show his emotions, was known for his crazy socks, and loved his second home in Madison, Indiana, which he referred to as “his apartment that his husband bought for him.”  He was a hard person to forget and will be remembered for his kindness, his infectious giggle and his zest for life.

Survivors include his husband, Jeff Veldhof; nephew (son), Dylan Shay Koglin; mother, Sue Prewitt; father, Charlie (Cindy) Prewitt; sister, Haley Prewitt; nieces and nephew, Riley, Cami, A.J., Kai and Arianna Prewitt; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Kacy Prewitt.

Visitation for family and close friends will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral Home, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis.  Public visitation will be held prior to Mass on Wednesday, February 28, from 11 to 1 p.m. in St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania St., Indpls.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at 1 p.m.   Everyone is invited to a meal in the Parish Life Center following Mass as Matt’s wishes were to be cremated and buried with his husband (and dogs) at a later time in Holland, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Roch Catholic School, 3603 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46217 or JDRF (Type-1 diabetes research), P.O. Box 5021, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5021
