Michael Charles Mappes, 61, of Trafalgar, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 19, 2026. He was born on November 2, 1964, in Beech Grove, to the late Bernard Charles and Lois Ann (Smith) Mappes. On September 29, 1990, Mike married the love of his life, Cynthia Lynn (Markiel) Mappes, at St. Roch Catholic Church, and she survives.
A proud graduate of Roncalli High School, Class of 1983, Mike went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana Central University (now the University of Indianapolis), where he also played college football, an experience he cherished and often reflected on with pride. He worked as a dispatcher in logistics and was employed with Wheaton Van Lines.
Mike was an avid sports fan who loved cheering for Indiana University and the University of Alabama. His passion for Alabama football ran deep, Saturdays in the fall were sacred, and he rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Crimson Tide. Whether celebrating a big win or analyzing every play, he brought the same enthusiasm and loyalty to Alabama football that he carried throughout his life. He also enjoyed following the Cincinnati Reds, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Indiana Pacers. For many years, he coached in the Bantam Youth Football League for “The Trojans,” a role he cherished.
Known for his humor, sarcasm, and quick wit, yet also his gentle, soft‑spoken nature, Mike brought joy to those around him. He loved the beach and treasured vacations with family and friends. A lifelong animal lover, especially of dogs, he found his greatest happiness in being “Papaw” to his beloved granddaughter, Wrenley.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Mappes; his son, Mitchell Mappes; his daughter, Mallory (John) Volk; siblings, Mark (Karen) Mappes, Debbie (Steve) Watkins, Nick (Joyce) Mappes, Sharon (John) Swhear, and Dianne (Chuck) Williams; granddaughter, Wrenley Volk; his beloved dogs, Daisy and Major; his granddogs, Rocco and Max; godchildren, Kody Kavanaugh and Katie Mis; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Mappes.
Family and friends will gather on Monday, April 27, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis. A service celebrating his life will follow at 6 p.m., with Pastor Rick Harting officiating.
