Michael “Duke” Alan Renfro Sr., 67
Michael “Duke” Alan Renfro Sr., of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from complications following surgery. He was born July 8, 1958, in Indianapolis to the late Earl and Lucy Renfro.
Duke graduated from Arsenal Tech High School and earned his lifelong nickname from his admiration for Duke University athletics. An avid sports fan, he loved playing basketball with his son, Mikey, and often welcomed Mikey’s friends into their home—acting as a second father and mentor to many.
Following his son’s coaching career was one of Duke’s greatest joys. He cheered without fail when Beech Grove Varsity Boys Basketball captured the state championship in 2022, proud of Mikey’s dedication both on and off the court.
Music filled Duke’s heart, and he could often be found belting out tunes at karaoke nights. He was his grandchildren’s biggest supporter; Kailani, Kyla, Michael III, and Mylan meant the world to him. Duke shared an extraordinary bond with his sister, Lisa, speaking or visiting daily. To countless others, he was a trusted friend, a wise counselor, and the embodiment of generosity.
Survivors include his son, Michael Alan (Alisha) Renfro Jr; sister, Lisa Renfro; former wife and life-long friend, Alice Alexander; and grandchildren, Kailani Perry, Kyla Renfro, Michael Alan Renfro III and Mylan Joseph Lewis Renfro. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Bub Renfro and Patty Spinks.
Family and friends will gather on Monday, August 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis.
