Michael Bruce Tookes

Michael Bruce Tookes, 71, of Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in I.U. Methodist Hospital.  He was born on December 27, 1951, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to Roy Tookes, Jr. and Rosemary (Collins) Abbott.  Mike was a graduate of Harry E. Wood High School, class of 1970.

Michael was a devout Christian who truly loved the lord with his heart, soul and mind; always the first to pray when there was a problem and quick to offer help to those in need.  He was a simple and kind man that enjoyed helping others but didn’t like a lot of attention and always preferred to do things anonymously.  Michael loved his friends and his coffee, every morning he went to either White Castle or McDonalds where he enjoyed a cup of coffee and conversation, he never met a stranger and was someone seldom forgotten due to his kindness and concern for others.     

Michael shared a loved for animals with his grandmother when he was growing up, she taught him how to care and handle them properly, something he never forgot. He loved his cat, Oreo, who he spent many a day with especially after his health started to decline.  Michael didn’t like to miss church on Sunday, when he could no longer go, he started watching services on tv, there is no doubt where he is today! 

Michael will be remembered for his kindness, helpfulness and being a devout son, who cared for his mother, Rosemary, as she advanced in years.  We know that life changed, not ended; Michael went on to heaven to help prepare the way for the rest of us, he will be truly missed. 

Survivors include his loving mother, Rosemary Abbott; sisters, Joyce Ann Tookes Carter and Vivian Lee Tookes; nieces and nephews, Rod (Christa) Carter, Tamara (Brian) Turner, Jason (Dawn) Carter and Jennifer Loy; half-sister Cheryl Shelton (Steve) and her daughter Heidi Pate (Diarmo), half-sisters Cynthia and Samanthia Tookes and their children; great-nieces and nephews, Haley, Aaron, Isaac, Elias, Abbey, Emery and Stacia; great-great-nieces, Avery and Finley; and his beloved cat, Oreo.  He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Tookes, Jr. 

Family and friends will gather on Thursday, October 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis.  A service celebrating his life will begin at 1 p.m. with Chaplain Mike Mercer officiating.  Burial will follow with services in Greenwood Cemetery.
