Paul Schoettle Obituary

Paul B. Schoettle (March 31, 1943 – September 9, 2019)

Paul B. Schoettle, age 76, passed away on September 9, 2019.  He was born on March 31, 1943, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to the late Harold and Florence Jeanette (Sims) Schoettle. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1961. Paul worked for over thirty-five years for the insurance company founded by his father, United Home Life Insurance Company, holding various roles, including Executive Vice-President and Chief Underwriting Officer.

Paul was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church.  He was very devout in his faith, attending daily mass either at St. Roch or one of the other southside parishes.  He was a longtime volunteer with Gennesaret Free Clinic, driving the mobile medical van that brought medical care to homeless people in the city. He never turned away anyone who asked for his help.

Paul was a fan of all sports, especially Notre Dame football and the Chicago Cubs.  His favorite sports were those played by his grandchildren and he rarely missed one of their events. He was an avid card player, including poker, euchre, and countdown, and never passed up a chance to play with his family. He enjoyed golf and was a founding member of The Misters golf tournament. In his youth he spent his summers at the family cottages on Lake Wawasee, and was an excellent water skier (or so he told his sons). He also bowled and played softball for many years.

Paul was loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his four sons:  R. J. (Kelly), Steve, Greg (Liz), and Eric (Angie).  He had fourteen grandchildren:  Alex, Casey, Nathan; Kevin, Alyssa, Tyler, Sam; Jackson, Lucy; Rudy, Cecelia, Annie, Winnie, and Ara. Surviving siblings:  Mike, Jim, Helen Gilkey, Ned, Mark, Susie Thornburg, Jeff, Theresa Hull, and David.  Predeceased siblings:  Mary Beth Bowling, Penny Bowling, Fred, Tom, Michael, and Rita. He is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his former spouses, Norma Schoettle and Teresa Dunn, his longtime friend, Dottie Mazza, and his former daughter-in-law, Michelle Chase Schoettle.

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at Lauck & Veldhof Funeral and Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian Street.
