Franciscan Catholic priest Father Edward Boren passed into eternal life on the morning of July 10, 2024 at Envive Nursing Home in Indianapolis.
Born in Indianapolis on September 2, 1936, to Edward Daniel and Mary Ann Boren (Foreman), Fr. Edward spent his youth in Indianapolis’ Old South Side. As a strong Catholic family, the Boren’s were members of St. John the Evangelist and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Fr. Edward was received into the Franciscans of the Sacred Heart Province in Teutopolis, IL on June 21, 1956. He was ordained as a priest on January 19, 1964, at Sacred Heart Church in Indianapolis.
The list of assignments for Fr. Edward is lengthy with some notable ministries: Pastoral Formation in Cleveland; teaching at Hales Franciscan High School (Chicago) and Roncalli High School (Indianapolis); chaplaincy and teaching in San Antonio, Texas; pastorate at Von Ormy (built the church), Macdona in San Antonio, TX; pastorate at Our Lady of Guadalupe (Bay City, built the church), Blessed Sacrament Parish in Houston (built the church), and St. John the Baptist in Joliet, IL.
Fr. Edward was involved with Hispanic ministries for many years, a special focus that he maintained for the rest of his life. He was active in the areas of Knoxville, San Antonio, Houston, Indianapolis, and many more.
In early 2022, Fr. Edward was transferred to Sacred Heart Friary in Indianapolis to be closer to his family and to provide supply ministry in the area. Shortly after his arrival, he needed knee surgery. Recovery was difficult and shortly it became evident that Fr. Ed needed more assistance in his daily life. Envive Nursing Home became the health care provider that was able to assist him until death. The Franciscan friars and family would like to express our gratitude for the excellent care that Fr. Edward received. Fr. Ed has many relatives in Indianapolis: Sister Alice (Daniel) Halloran, nieces and nephews Cathleen, Kevin, Marianne (Raymond) Gates, Tim, Christina, Brian, Barbara (Robert) Diemer, Stephen (Lori) Halloran. Great nephews Patrick, Matthew, Vincent, Ryan and Ethan and many great - great nephews and nieces. He is also a member of the Franciscan Community of Sacred Heart Friary.
Fr. Edward always looked forward to the family vacations, playing board games, golf with friends and family, loved the beach, long walks and visiting relatives in Ireland. Cards of condolence can be sent to Sacred Heart Friary, 1530 Union Street, Indianapolis, IN 46225.
Visitation has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 23, at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 1530 Union Street, IN 46225. The Funeral Mass will take place immediately after visitation at 11:00 AM. A Mercy Meal is scheduled at 12:30 pm at Sacred Heart Parish Hall (1125 S. Meridian Street, Indianapolis IN 46225).
