Rita Donovan Obituary

Rita Ann (Scoones) Donovan, 93, of Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2024, at the Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis, IN. She lived since 2020 at the Envive Healthcare of Beech Grove, IN, formerly known as St. Paul’s Hermitage. She was born January 13, 1931, in Clinton, IL, to the late Edwin and Laura (Hooley) Scoones. She married the love of her life, Dr. Robert L. Donovan, on November 10, 1951, in Peoria, IL; he preceded her in death on June 27, 2005.

Rita graduated from the Academy of Our Lady in Peoria, IL. She went on to graduate from Midwest College, where she earned an associate’s degree. She was employed by Sears Department Store for over 20 years until her retirement.

Rita enjoyed theater, not only local community theater but also Broadway productions in New York, which she enjoyed traveling to with her close friends. Without any athletic background, she took up golf to play with her husband, who was an avid golfer. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her daughters, particularly on the once–in–a–lifetime trip to Ireland.

Rita’s family was not just a part of her life; it was her life. Her children, who inherited her unwavering love and care, have grown rich, embodying her courage, determination, and independence. Her friends and family will forever remember her for her loyalty and boundless generosity. Family and friendships were not the limit to her generosity. She did not turn away from others who needed care. These character qualities will leave indelible, lasting memories and models for her family.

Survivors include her children: Tim (Jillian) Donovan, Kathy (Peter) Ambrose, Patty (Dave) Duclos, Julie (Dave) Petri, Sallie (Bruce) Vanzo, and Matt (Angela) Donovan; fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and daughter, Kerrie (Jeff) Hassan, and siblings, Margaret Sell and Jack Myatt.

Family and friends will gather on Saturday, August 10, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Envive Healthcare of Beech Grove, 501 N. 17th Ave., Beech Grove, IN.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at 10 a.m. with Fr. James Wilmoth presiding.
