Rita Margaret (Halfaker) Eads, age 98, was born on flag day, June 14, 1923 to Marguerite and Phillip Halfaker.
Rita attended St. Joseph Grade School and St. John’s High School in Indianapolis. She grew up in the first neighborhood east of downtown on Pine Street where she met her future husband at a young age, David Eads; he preceded her in death in 2005. They were married on the grounds of Syracuse University while David was in flight training school in 1943 with the U.S. Army Air Force. Shortly after they had their first child, Susan, while David was in the South Pacific Theater in WWII. Rita was a “Rosy Riveter” and worked at Allisons During the war.
After raising her nine children, Rita went back to school and earned her LPN licneses in her late 40’s and worked in nursing till her retirement. She was loved by many and will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, David; daughter, Susan; brother, Jack; sister, Mary Jean; and granddaughter, Amanda. Survivors include her children, Jack (Wendy), Becky Hadley, James, Paul (Brenda), Mary Ann, Mark (Linda), Joe (Trinh) and Christopher (Martha); 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1530 Union St., Indianapolis, with calling one hour prior to Mass starting at 10 a.m. Inurnment will follow services in Holy Cross Cemetery.
