Ruth M. Ohleyer Bindner, 98, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 18, 2023. She was born on March 7, 1925, in Indianapolis, to the late George and Mrytle Marie (Vaughn) Ohleyer. Ruth met the man she would marry, Harry L. Bindner, while working at Fidelity Bank & Trust company; they were married on February 12, 1949, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Ruth graduated from Sacred Heart High School, class of 1943. She was active in the North Deanery of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in the 1970’s serving as president for one year. She and her husband, Harry, were active members of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, and she was a member of the Indianapolis Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women and the St. Augustine Guild.
Ruth was active in the Marion County Association for the Mentally Handicapped and the Noble Volunteer League. She enjoyed gardening and playing golf occasionally with her husband, Harry. She loved to travel to see her grandchildren and the many business trips she took with her husband through the years. Ruth will be remembered most for her life-long devotion to her family and her parish community including Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was very proud of her southside heritage.
Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry L. Bindner; sisters, Anna Marie Lauck, Catherine Ohleyer, Helen Mosher and Mary Elizabeth Evard; son-in-law, Joseph L. Pierce; and her first born son, Joseph “Lil’ Joe.” Survivors include her children, Kathleen L. Pierce, Michael T. (Joan) Bindner, Marjorie T. Lowe, Stephen K. (Kathy) Bindner and Mary Jane (John) Gunter; grandchildren, Jennifer, James Allan, Rachel, Valerie, Amanda, Jonathan, Conor, Jessica, Kaitlyn, Rebecca, Alan Joseph, Colleen, Cameron, Sarah and Matt; and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, September 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis, where a eulogy and rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 23 at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1530 Union St., Indianapolis, with prayers being said at the funeral home prior to Mass at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow services in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Envelopes will be provided by the funeral home.
