Ruthellen Magary Obituary

Ruthellen Stegemiller Magary, of Indianapolis, a talented musician and craftswoman, died at home on June 21, 2024. She was 70.

Ruthie was a woman of varied interests. She played cello and accordion. She was a skilled seamstress, cook and gardener. She enjoyed antiquing, camping, reading, boating on Patoka Lake – but above all, she loved spending time with family and friends, and relaxing with her dog Sophie on her lap.

She held a wide variety of jobs over her lifetime: senior data management specialist at Welborn Hospital in Evansville, secretary at Welborn Children’s Center, substitute teacher for Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp. and Signature School, cashier at Patoka Lake camp store, and operator of her own sewing-crafts business.

The daughter of Ruth Ralston Stegemiller and Herbert W. Stegemiller, Ruthie was born in Indianapolis on December 8, 1953. She was a 1972 graduate of Southport High School and a 1976 graduate of the University of Evansville, where she studied music education.

Ruthie is survived by her husband, Michael Magary of Indianapolis; sons, David Schweickart of French Lick, Indiana, and Nicholas Schweickart (Angela) of Evansville; daughters, Emily Magary and Xiaoli Magary, both of Indianapolis; and stepchildren, Brian Magary and M. Shawn Magary (Rachel), both of Evansville. She also leaves behind grandsons, Zachery Tucker and Ryan Schweickart as well as step-grandson, Keagan Magary, all of Evansville.

Other survivors are her sisters, Mary Pendleton (Mike) of Orlando, Florida, Lisa Peake (Gordon) of Tucson, Arizona, Priscilla Lawler (Ed) of Michiana, Michigan; and brothers, Matthew Stegemiller (Jane) of Indianapolis and Andy Stegemiller (Lyn) of North Liberty, Indiana. Ruthie’s oldest sister, Susan died in 2023. Aunt Ruthie leaves behind 14 nephews and one niece.

Also among those who will miss Ruthie is her beloved dog Sophie, of Indianapolis.
