Suzanne Carey Obituary

Suzanne Fulton Carey, age 89, died peacefully at home on February 15, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  She was born on a farm in Decatur County to Verna Fay Thurston Fulton and John Wesley Fulton.  Her parents and her sister, Mary Jo Fulton Fox, preceded her in death as did her husband of 48 years, Robert Clark Carey.  Survivors include her daughter Julie Clark Carey of Indianapolis, her son David Fulton Carey and his fiancé/partner, Jill Harrington of Bowie, Maryland, her grandchildren Madeline and Alexander LaMorie and Jaxon and Mariska Carey; her two nephews, Jon Fox (Paula) of Jacksonville, Florida and Don Fox (Tracy) of Culver, Indiana. Suzanne took enormous pride in her family including her multiple great, and great-great nephews and nieces (Tricia, Wesley, Jody, Jack, and Aiden) as well as many exchange students, especially Tim Riedel of Germany and Tanya Popova of Russia and London. She also dearly loved her dogs and is survived by her cocker spaniel Peanut who was her most constant companion.

Suzanne was valedictorian of her class at Jackson Township High School and graduated cum laude in 1956 from Indiana University where she was also president of her sorority Zeta Tau Alpha.  She then taught for a year at Franklin Community High School and for a year in Cincinnati. She married Robert in 1958 and they lived in Indianapolis for three years, where she taught at Warren Central High School and earned an MA in English from Butler University.  When they moved to Champaign, Illinois, she taught at Champaign High School until her daughter and son were born.  Then she worked part time at the University of Illinois as a supervisor of student teachers while she earned her Ph.D. in Secondary Education, English.

The family lived in Bozeman, Montana, from 1978-1982 and Suzanne taught part time at Montana State University.  When they moved to Kokomo Indiana in 1982, she taught at Northwestern High School until 2004 and part time at Indiana University Kokomo before retiring in 2009. In 2013 she moved to the southside of Indianapolis to a house next to her daughter.

In her later years she enjoyed volunteering at Nearly New in Kokomo, attending Beef and Boards with friends, traveling (especially to see family), participating in Bible Studies with the Ladies’ group at Murphy’s Landing, attending Rosedale Hills UMC, and reading all manner of books on her Kindle.

She was a great believer in education and was a trailblazer by earning her PH.D. in Secondary Education, English during a time when it was uncommon for women to gain advanced degrees.
