Thomas Joseph Schafer, 69, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 16, 2024. He was born on December 25, 1954, in Beech Grove to Charles E. and Agnes A. (Springman) Schafer.
Tom was a graduate of Roncalli High School, class of 1972, and went on to get a degree in architectural drafting from ITT Technical Institute in 1974. He was a project manager for Bay Development for most of his career but later retired from Menards where he was an estimator. Tom was a member of the Msgr. James M. Downer 3660 Knights of Columbus and enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing.
Tom was a very faith filled man and was ready to help anyone who need it in any way. He enjoyed volunteering at fundraisers and picnics sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.
Survivors include his three daughters, Erin (Brian) Eagan, Nancy (Paul) Stewart and Anna (Joe) Hinds; siblings, Chuck (Syd) Schafer, John (Donna) Schafer, Jim (Mary Beth) Schafer, Jean (Randy) Ezell and Barb (Doug) Young; grandchildren, Anthony Stewart, Taylor Eagan, Frankie Eagan, Gino Stewart, Colin Eagan, Dominic Hinds, Enzo Stewart, Jackson Hinds and Giorgia Stewart; and his former wife and mother of his children, Mary Kay (Cassiero) Childers.
Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, June 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 20 at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1530 Union St., Indianapolis. Cremation will follow services and inurnment will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to St. Vincent de Paul. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home and Sacred Heart.
