William “Dzia” Edward Niezgodski, Sr.
William “Dzia” Edward Niezgodski, Sr., aged 92, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 30, 1933, in South Bend, Indiana, he was the beloved son of the late Alexander R. and Cecelia C. (Jamrozy) Niezgodski.
After graduating from high school, Bill proudly served in the United States Army. He then earned a degree in pharmacy from Purdue University in 1955 and embarked on a long and distinguished career as a registered pharmacist. He also enjoyed a brief entrepreneurial venture with Bill’s Economy Drug Store and the Donut Hut. On July 18, 1959, he married the love of his life, Barbara A. (Parrish) Niezgodski. Together, they cherished 66 years of marriage, raising six children and enjoying the love of 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, Bill served as a Past Grand Knight and later became a Fourth Degree Knight. His faith and dedication to service were evident in his tireless volunteer work with the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Indianapolis.
Bill’s many passions included gardening, painting, playing bridge, singing in the choir, and spending cherished time with his family. He will be fondly remembered for his playful spirit, highlighted by his uncanny Donald Duck impersonations, and for the deep love and devotion he showed to his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Niezgodski; his children, Cynthia M. (David) Helfgott, Kathleen A. McCan, Mary M. (Jeff) Nate, Susan J. (Dale) Smith, Tracy E. (Tim) Simmons, and William E. Niezgodski, Jr.; grandchildren, Sarah E. (Adrian Escobar Bustos) Helfgott, Colin E. (Cassie) McCan, Kacey H. McCan, Daniel P. Nate, Christopher D. (Paige) Nate, Charles J. Smith, King Charles B. Smith, Jessica A. Simmons, Cory J. Simmons, Emma E. Simmons, William J. Niezgodski, Josephine A. (Colin) Barger, Benjamin E. Niezgodski, Amelia E. Niezgodski, Matthew A. Niezgodski, Samantha M. Niezgodski, Oscar R. Niezgodski, and Nicholas P. Niezgodski; and great-grandchildren, Elena, Maria, Luka, Anthony, Callum, and Eisley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Alexander C. Niezgodski and Donald R. Niezgodski; and grandchildren, twins Mary & Christian Simmons, and great grandchildren, Sawyer Lucas, and twins Analiese & Gabriel Escobar Helfgott
Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, September 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 5353 McFarland Rd., Indianapolis. Thursday, September 25 from 9:00 to 9:45 am Family and friends will again gather prior to the Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 25 at 10 a.m. in the church with Fr. Peter Marshall presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Envelopes will be provided at the church. Services and care have been entrusted to Lauck & Veldhof Funeral Home.
